SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Baltimore Orioles pitcher Alfredo Simon, who was accused of shooting and killing a 25-year-old man over the weekend, claims it was an accident.
Simon turned himself in to Dominican National Police on Monday morning, saying that he had no intention of shooting the victim, Michael Esteban Castillo. His lawyer claims that Simon fired his gun into the air without the intent of anyone being hurt.
“In truth that young man [Castillo] was my friend, like a brother. It wasn’t a thing like we began arguing and I started shooting. It was some accident; it happened by accident. That’s why I came here [the police station] – to open my soul,” said Simon.
Simon was also accused of injuring Castillo’s 17-year-old brother, Starlin. Puerto Plata District Attorney Victor Mieses said that he is going to push for a three month incarceration period in order to investigate the incident further. Simon was scheduled to appear for arraignment at the courthouse in Puerto Plata on Monday. The 29-year-old faces possible murder charges.
